Picked this little dude up for cheap, not running of course. BUT ONLY 5k ORIGINAL MILES! So what’s the worst it could be?!?
I figured I’d just clean the carb (which was actually NEW) adjust the valves and she’d fire right up. I couldn’t get it to run on the right cylinder for the life of me. Had good spark, new plug, and a single carb feeding both cylinders…So what gives!
I adjusted the valves and the right side ones were insanely loose….hmmmm
So I pull the plugs and check compression. Left side fiercely sucked my thumb in and then pushed it out of the plug hole, right side…? Nothing. Damn.
Also damn, you have to pull the motor to pull the head on this bike! Dumb.
It was easy enough. At this point I pretty much knew it would a bent valve. With such low miles and the fact it had ZERO compression, that’s about the only option. So I popped it all apart and found this.
See that light shining around the valve. That’s NOT ALLOWED! Turns out both valves on the right side were massively bent. Only possible explanation is someone didn’t understand what “redline” meant.
I soda blasted the head.
Then I ordered new valves and they came in quite quickly! I gave them all a good lapping, including the running side.
Here is a before and after on the NON-bent valve seat. After just 5k miles!
Can you see the difference? Note the grey ring around the hole in the second one. That’s what you want. this thing is going to run better than it did brand new when I get it back together.
Still waiting on the valve seals, and head gasket before I can reassemble.
Any day now.
